Characterization of Liposomes with Zeta Potential (ζ-Potential)

Mechanism

A liposome nanocarrier scattered in an aqueous solution gains a surface charge as a result of either the ionization of surface end-groups or the adsorption of charged species on its surface. The dispersed counter-ions will encircling the surface of the particle, at the same time as the zeta potential determines the electrical potential on the nanoparticle interface. The zeta potential is a primary detector of the colloidal stability of a liposome’s dispersions, because it expresses the degree of electrostatic repulsion among nanoparticles in a dispersion.


Determining factors

  • If zeta potential of nanoparticles is high, then it shows they are electrically stabilized.

  • But if zeta potential is low, then they are either aggregated or flocculated.


Furthermore, phase analysis light scattering (PALS) techniques is used to measure electrophoretic mobility µE of colloidal nanoparticles. Zeta potential and PALS techniques used as a combination to analyze electrostatic interactions in charged liposomes. This could further help in investigating the interaction present between complex charges liposomes and target cells or tissues.
